You know, the funny thing about Berlin (my current home) is that it initially became popular because of all the artistic types it attracted — and they were attracted to it largely because of its affordability. But then once the more affluent crowd started moving in, attracted to the art.... property values went up, and the artists started getting starved out. I hear this is the case anywhere: artists flock to affordable places, moneyed people flock to artists, artists then get priced out. There has to be a way to break that cycle.
