You know, I've never gotten a job (yet) through a job site either. With perhaps the very brief exception of a few short-term gigs abroad, I got all of my work thus far either through personal contacts and people who had already seen the caliber of my skill, or through cold-contacting prospective employers and shooting a resumé their way. At 39, unmarried, with a history of poverty-level income, and with no assets, I am frankly very scared. My "strategy" was to move overseas where I could afford to live in a low-cost city, within a country that subsidizes healthcare and pensions for creatives, but prices here (Berlin) have spiked in recent years, without my income keeping pace at all. One of my biggest fears is everything going bust and me having to return to the States, where it has always been IMPOSSIBLE for me to afford a basic standard of living. I'm trying my best and praying for miracles at the same time. I appreciate your advice, Michelle. And I truly wish you miracles of your own — including gatekeepers who recognize and support your talents.
