Yogi, thanks for your comments. And I hear you about coding; I used to do some coding when I was doing social sciences research. Granted, it was a very different kind, but coding nonetheless — so I understand what you mean about it requiring creativity... or at least human oversight. It's a shame that so much is geared toward cost-cutting without qualified humans free to opine on whether or not the cost-cutting is wise.

And I'm sorry you've felt this crunch in your job too. :(
