Yes, unhealthy relationships definitely add unhappiness to a person’s life. In those situations, working on personal healing and greater self-awareness is imperative, but it would even be wise to leave the unhealthy relationship first. Because it’s hard to devote much energy to deeper self-awareness and self-discovery when so much of your energy is going to keeping the “peace” with an abusive partner, or to satisfying a codependent one. And it’s hard to give yourself adequate space to heal when someone else in your life is repeatedly wounding you.
