Yes, it really grinds my gears when proofreaders without these qualifications — who have NO idea what research writing entails — get dazzled by the rates, decide to claim a cut of the copyediting pie, and thereby also undercut those of us who actually know what we're doing. They depress our wages, give academic copyediting a bad name (by making it look useless), and make would-be clients afraid to work with us (once they've hired an unqualified proofreader and have been burned by the wasted cash). I don't begrudge anyone for wanting to make better money, but the abundance of people claiming to do this job while they're unqualified and/or half-passing it is a real issue.

I'm hoping that some of the more optimistic commenters here are right: that people will ultimately recognize the value that qualified human copyeditors provide after all... but it will take time to get to that point. Keeping my fingers crossed for us.
