Wow, thanks for the recommendations, Scott! The next Murakami book on my TBR list is Dance Dance Dance, but I'll add your recommendation as well! Never tried anything by Gibson either, so if there's a particular title you recommend, please do.
I'm not much of a film buff, sadly, but someone recently told me I should read The Adjustment Bureau, which reminded me that my brother gave me the same recommendation long ago. Maybe also worth a watch.
As for books, I haven't read many spiritual/surrealist novels lately, but a couple of months ago, I read one that totally surprised me for how poignant and deep it was, while also being hilarious. It was called Just Like Magic, and it's hard to define the genre. Premise is: spirit guide takes on a human form to help a woman, and both of them start falling for each other. In the first third of the book, the protagonist isn't a pleasant person, and her character can be kind of grating. But what I loved about the book were a bunch of things: very insightful about how the earthly experience can impact a soul's vibe (i.e., you see the spirit guide becoming more and more "human" the longer he's here), reflections on the importance of joy and levity while we're here on Earth, beautiful depictions of how spirit communication and deep soul bonds can work, and some powerful reflections on unconditional love. It's a quirky blend of comedy, mysticism, romance.... and Christmas, of all things.
I also recently read Jitterbug Perfume. I really liked some of the book — some interesting reflections on interconnectedness and the simultaneity of our incarnations — but I didn't feel like it held a candle to how engaging Murakami's style is.
That's all I got for now, but I hope that helps. :)
