This is so relatable: I’ve gone from full-time language instructor/supervisor at a university, to social sciences researcher, to childcare worker, to editor, plus a few unpaid jobs in there besides. I’m 34 and reaching a reckoning moment, yet again, with my current work, realizing, “This is not sustainable.” Meanwhile, the one thing I have always most wanted to do, underneath, is write. As you point out though, it’s an enormous blessing to be able to throw in the towel when you discover you’re in the wrong work — and it’s so true that doing so can help your physical and mental health tremendously. Here’s to hoping we both have that “aha!” moment… or at least that writing finally becomes sustainable. :)
