Spain and Portugal are indeed pretty awesome places, but just in case you didn't know, Germany offers freelance visas, and with a government-subsidized social benefits program (i.e., health insurance, old age care, disability, and pension) for freelancers in the arts and publishing, to boot. Might be worth looking into!
