Coming from the New Age side of things, I will add to the religion point:

constantly shutting someone down or minimizing their concerns as "negative thinking."

"You're being negative" is the nondenominational "sin" that people with emotionally/psychologically abusive tendencies might rely on to invalidate their victims. Because telling somebody they're "being too negative" is a handy way to:

- silence them

- belittle their ideas

- disallow their narrative

- minimize their (justified) emotions

- shame them for their perspectives

- sidestep accountability for their grievances

- stonewall / - evade certain topics of conversation

- position oneself as the "superior," more "evolved" party

- challenge their right to talk about the things that bother them
