Oh, yikes, I just listened to that one now. I get the parallel theme of feeling insecure next to a popular girl (?), but the Saving Jane lyrics are really toxic: the Saving Jane singer is talking about wanting to “hit” the other girl and trying to console herself with the idea that her rival must be “ugly” inside. Taylor Swift doesn’t really say anything about the popular girl in her own song other than that this girl is a bad match for the boy.
The two songs’ stories are also fundamentally different: “The Girl Next Door” is all about a girl who feels insecure to the point of viciousness, and her “rival” is just some random, sweet, popular girl — while the singer already has the boy she (herself) likes. “YBWM,” by contrast, is about a girl who feels overlooked by some boy who happens to be suffering in an unhealthy relationship with a popular girl. So in that case, I can’t even say I see a similar attitude.
Basically, “The Girl Next Door” is all about wishing ill on some innocent-bystander girl, whereas “YBWM” is all about wishing some boy would see that he’s in a bad relationship and has a chance for a deeper type of connection right in front of him.
So I have to admit, I can’t really see “YBWM” as having stolen from Saving Jane. But I still appreciate the music recommendation. :)
