Joe, awesome essay. I don’t know how I didn’t come across that one before. The comments section was a ride! It was timely, too, as I more or less woke up to another disgruntled man today, complaining that I didn’t center men’s vulnerability or attack women enough in my latest story about men’s shitty behavior towards me, a woman. His beef was that my piece was gendered when men are also victims and women can also be problematic. *Cue eye-roll at the purposeful missing of my point.*
Anyway, I will say, at the very least, I think men get less blowback from other men about not “including” the male perspective “enough” — since they know that male writers are a male perspective. I don’t say this to minimize the shit you have to deal with, though. Rather, what I’m trying to say is: women NEED men like you to keep championing the cause. Because male writers (on feminism) seem to receive at least a little bit less vitriol than female writers do.
So THANK YOU for using your privilege to champion the cause! :)
