I'm so sorry, Sean. A psychotic neighbor tried to break into my apartment a few years ago while I was home alone — after months of her making threats that the police couldn't do anything about — and it was one of the scariest occasions of my life. I was shaken up for weeks, and it frankly still affects how I look at the idea of "security." For me, it helped to talk to a counselor for a single session as soon as I noticed I was developing PTSD. (I'd had PTSD in the past and recognized the symptoms; luckily, my earlier therapy seemed to help me manage the new trauma.)

I hope your city will do more to help the people across the street who are clearly struggling, so that all of you can live in peace. Stay safe, and take care of yourselves. I hope you have emotional support in processing what happened.
