I recently filled out a Medium survey, and I said pretty much EXACTLY this: if you want higher-quality shit, you have to pay better for it. Otherwise, this platform will function like a content mill, with writers scrambling to churn out quantity just to keep getting paid. Meanwhile, quality takes a nosedive, and writers don't have the breathing room to leverage their talent.

I hope Medium has figured this out by now. If not — keep saying it.
