Hi Shola! I think you might’ve intended your comment for somebody else? My original comment didn’t actually mention the word “rape” anywhere at all. :)

That said, the unfortunate reality of rape is that it can take many forms, and some rapists indeed might “offer.” (As we’ve seen in some “Me Too” news stories.) An “offer” of sexual interaction can still be predatory if it entails coercion and therefore jettisons the idea of genuine, enthusiastic, freewill consent. In a situation like Holly’s, where the threat of eviction / homelessness was on the table, it would have been hard to call any sex with the landlord un-coerced; this is why she referred to being half-scared to reject him.

Of course, though, just because rape might sometimes involve an “offer,” this does not mean that interactions that don’t involve an offer are not rape; that would be a false dichotomy.

Most importantly, I’m very sorry to hear that you experienced that as a child. I sincerely hope that your life now as an adult is full of kind people who respect you and your boundaries. Wishing you well!
