To tell a memoirist that their memoir is flawed for the fact that it was written as memoir — instead of its incorporating the elements of a journalistic or academic article — is not valid criticism. It’s like telling a pastry chef that their chocolate eclair “lacks” onion. You may like onion. You may prefer onion. But onion doesn’t need to be in the chocolate eclair.
Same principle here: you may like statistics, you may want statistics, but if you criticize a memoirist for writing about their personal experience, rather than about the statistics that you wish to see, the criticism is unwarranted.
