The sad thing is, even before AI, remote work already depressed wages in my industry a long time ago; people from expensive countries neeeeeeed to charge the rates they charge, just to survive. Our prices are coming from a place entirely opposite of greed (unlike people who don't need to charge so much to survive). At the same time, the client base for people from expensive countries is usually also based in the same expensive countries... which means that those clients have to save money and often, therefore, look abroad for cheaper labor.

The irony in the language field (in particular) is that a lot of non-native speakers can't do this kind of work to the highest level, but the native speakers who need language writing/editing/translating help tend to have NO idea that their cut-rate price is coming with sub-standard quality — because their own skills aren't developed enough to notice mistakes in the first place. This kind of competition that's been starving the freelancers from expensive countries was already an issue for years, but AI has just made it even tougher.

In any case, as an immigrant who often needs (non-professional) translations myself, I truly appreciate how LLM makes my life much easier. So I'm with you on that one. Thanks for your comment! :)
