Great points, Linda. I think another factor is that tech people often see writing as an "alien" skill and more readily recognize that they need help with it; people in the social sciences and humanities pride themselves on their communication abilities and are slower to notice or acknowledge that they need help. (Not to mention that the tech camp has more money to spend on hiring services than the others anyway.)

Also a great point about the utility of publications, rather than sheer quantity. I'd love to see a world where scholars are rewarded for taking as much time as they need to produce exceptional work, rather than exhausting themselves on a hamster wheel. I wonder what it will take to change that.
