Germany has a government-funded benefits program for freelancers in publishing and the arts. If you decide to move to Germany on a freelance visa, that could be an option. Healthcare here is excellent and affordable, many doctors speak English, and the program basically matches your contributions to a public insurance program, social security, AND old-age care. Rolled into that, there's also coverage if you need medical care while abroad.

If only more countries valued creatives enough to do the same. :-/
