Bingo.
Part of me almost wonders if this will become "the point": when people are so happy in their virtual world — their virtual beachfront bungalows, with their virtual kickass wardrobe, etc. — perhaps a prosperity-adjacent experience will be enough to placate them into no longer caring so much about their own real-world struggle and lack. That is, maybe virtual facsimiles of comfort and beauty will become the way that people numb themselves to the sting of real-world poverty and pain. I can see commercial and political interests taking advantage of this, offering people enjoyable fake experiences (which cost much less to give), rather than making changes in operations or in policy to legitimately improve quality of (real) life.
I hope the people stay awake.
